Canada Makes It Easier for Caregivers to Move In!
Great News for Individuals Who Aspire to Care for Others: The Canadian government is making it easier for caretakers to remain in the country indefinitely. They are resuming two specific initiatives.
Two Special Programs: New applications will be accepted for the Home Support Worker Program and the Home Child Care Provider Program beginning on January 1, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). These programs are for you if you’re a caregiver and your family wishes to settle permanently in Canada.
Two Options to Remain Forever: These five-year programs assist caregivers and their families in obtaining permanent Canadian citizenship. You have two options for applying: either apply for permanent residence right away or apply after gaining some job experience. Note that there is an application fee, which starts at $CAN 1,085.
1. Direct Path to Permanent Residence
If you already have 12 months of relevant work experience, you and your family can apply for permanent residence directly. You can do this through either the Home Support Worker Pilot or the Home Child Care Provider Pilot.
2. Gaining Experience
For those who have less than 12 months of work experience or no previous full-time caregiver work experience in Canada, there’s another option called the Gaining Experience category. If you’ve worked as a caregiver full-time in Canada for a total of 12 months or more within the past 36 months, you can apply under the Direct Path to Permanent Residence category.

Changes in Work Experience Requirements
The amount of work experience required for domestic caregivers to apply for permanent residence has changed significantly in Canada. Caregivers now only need 12 months of experience, as opposed to 24 months as in the past.
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) must provide evidence of sufficient experience to applicants, particularly if they have previously applied under the “Gaining Experience” category.
