Collation of the Team that have won afcon in the Africa Cup
The premier men’s international football competition on the African continent is the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). 1957 saw the beginning of it.
With 24 countries in the main draw and 52 in the qualifiers, AFCON has grown from a tiny competition with only three teams in its first edition to the biggest football event in Africa.
The Africa Cup of Nations, which has been hosted 33 times by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continental governing body of football, has seen 14 different nations win the title to date.
The inaugural AFCON was held in 1957, with just Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan participating. Egypt emerged victorious, defeating Ethiopia 4-0 in the championship match.
In the early days, AFCON was held at random intervals but became a biennial competition in 1968.
Moreover, the tournament was gradually expanded to eight teams in 1968, which increased the level of competition.
Six countries won the continental title between 1970 and 1980, out of which five teams won it for the first time.
With new nations joining CAF, the field for AFCON was increased to 12 in 1992 and 16 in 1996. The 2019 and 2021 editions saw 24 teams take part in the continental showpiece.
The African Cup of Nations was switched to odd years in 2013 to prevent clashes with the FIFA World Cup in even years.
The tournament has featured some of the best players ever in world football, including Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Sadio Mane (Senegal) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt).
Olympic gold medalist and Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o is the highest goalscorer in the AFCON with 18 goals, followed by Laurent Pokou of Ivory Coast with 14.
Egypt is the most successful team on the list of AFCON winners, having won seven times total, including three in a row from 2006 to 2010. They have placed third three times (1963, 1970, and 1974) and runners-up three times (1962, 2017 and 2021).
With three more podium finishes and five titles under their belt, Cameroon is the second-most successful AFCON squad.
Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties in the championship match to win the AFCON 2021 (held in 2022). It was Senegal’s maiden victory at the continental championship.
